Welcome to the ADEQ Waste Programs Division

The mission of the Waste Programs Division is to protect and enhance public health and the environment by reducing the risk associated with waste management, contaminated sites and regulated substances. Director: Amanda Stone; Deputy Director: Veronica Garcia.

Our core responsibilities include:
  • Assuring the proper handling, storage, treatment and disposal of wastes, and proper operation and maintenance of underground storage tank;
  • Investigating complaints and violations of Arizona's solid waste, hazardous waste and underground storage tank laws;
  • Investigating, managing and remediating soil and groundwater that are contaminated with regulated and hazardous substances;
  • Promoting pollution prevention and recycling;
  • Reviewing and approving construction plans for landfills and special waste facilities;
  • Administering payments from the State Assurance Fund for reimbursement of eligible costs associated with removal and remediation of leaking USTs.

Changes to the Waste Tire Regulations
On Sept. 26, 2008, changes to the waste tire regulations became effective. HB2426 was signed by the Governor on April 16, 2008, making changes to Arizona Revised Statutes §§ 44-1301, 44-1304.01, 49-762, 49-762.01 and 49-762.02.

West Van Buren Regional Remedy Evaluation   State Assurance Fund (SAF) Update
UST releases reported after June 30, 2006 are not eligible for any coverage from the State Assurance Fund. Additionally, any SAF application made or expense incurred for UST corrective action after June 30, 2010 is not eligible for coverage from the SAF. ADEQ will continue processing all timely submitted claims for payment by July 1, 2011.
