American Water Enterprises(AWE), the non-regulated products and services
division of American Water, has a Water Plant Operator position
available
at its Surprise, AZ location.

AWE's non-regulated business units offer operations and maintenance
contract services across the United States and Canada, including design,
construction and operation of community onsite water and wastewater
systems, service-line protection programs, water and wastewater
management
for military bases, and other innovative solutions that address a
variety
of challenges facing the industry.

The Primary Role of the Water Plant Operator is to be responsible for
the
operation of a drinking water treatment plant, including running
equipment
and managing a SCADA system in order to meet plant production goals.
Under
very limited supervision, serve in a lead capacity in a variety of
semi-skilled maintenance work, and operate a variety of equipment in the
operation, repair, maintenance, and replacement of water and lift
station
facilities.


Key Accountabilities:

Independently monitor and oversee the performance of all equipment,
gauges
and charts in the treatment plant and pump stations.

Maintain, operate, repair, and replace equipment as necessary

Perform and chart lab test results, trend analysis and maintain accurate
records of analysis and test results.

Collect samples and identify concentrations of chemical, physical or
biological characteristics of water as required in
accordance with local, state, and federal requirements; gather and test
water samples to operate the plant at maximum
efficiency and file reports as required.

Take a lead role in making plant operate within required standards by
suggesting and recommending SOP's including practicing good housekeeping
as
per applicable regulatory and departmental standards.
Respond to call-out as required in a timely fashion.

Monitor and calibrate all lab and process control equipment related to
water treatment.
Maintain a variety of records related to operations, inspections,
maintenance activity, water supply, consumption, etc. Perform a lead
role,
and take responsibility when assigned, for working with regulatory
agencies
during inspections and audits.

Primary duty is the operation of the plant, however, will help with
maintenance as time allows
Perform all duties in conformance to appropriate safety, environmental,
and
security standards.
Makes sure the Plant remains compliant while on duty

Skills:

Communicate in an effective manner both oral and written with the
general
public and Company personnel. Read, understand, and follow instructions,
safety rules, etc.

Mathematical skills sufficient to be able to calculate dosages, surface
areas, volumes, weights, measures and algebraic formulas. Mechanical
ability sufficient to operate and maintain pumps, valves, motors and
other
mechanical equipment related to plant operation and maintenance.

Physical fitness- capable of moving and/or carrying 50 lbs. or more on a
frequent basis. Walking up and down stairs and long distances. Carrying,
climbing, and working from ladders. Working in confined areas.

Ability to wear a respirator or SCBA as required. Ability to work
extended
periods of time, up to twelve hours, rotating shifts (Days/ Nights)
unaccompanied.

Environmental conditions including contact with water, chemicals, fumes,
odors and dust as a result of working with and handling potentially
hazardous water treatment and laboratory chemicals. May be required to
work
in inclement weather conditions for extended periods of time.

Must be able to work outside in temperatures above 110 degrees F.


Knowledge:

Knowledge of water treatment processes, safe chemical handling
procedures,
basic scientific concepts and water quality standards, Federal and State
regulations and Company procedures.

Knowledge of Actiflo, UV Disinfection, and Ozone systems is a plus
Working
knowledge of basic mechanical and automated control systems.

Arizona Department of Environmental quality, WTPO Level III at time of
hire

High School graduate or state recognized education equivalency
certificate.
College course work and/or degree in biology, chemistry, environmental
science or engineering curriculum are desired.  Attend continuing
education
as needed for Operator certification renewal.
