ADEQ Director Owens Announces $61,000 Community Recycling Grant to City
of Mesa

PHOENIX (July 11, 2008) - Arizona Department of Environmental Quality
Director Steve Owens announced today that ADEQ is awarding $61,000 to
fund recycling in the City of Mesa.

The grant will fund "Recycling for the Masses," a program to recycle
waste at Mesa public schools and to provide recycling at the Hohokam
Stadium, the winter home of the Chicago Cubs.

The funds will be used to purchase recycling barrels and containers,
signs, promotional materials and mailers.

This grant is funded by the Waste Reduction Assistance program, for
projects devoted to waste reduction, recycling, and composting.

"Recycling is one of our most effective tools to protect our
environment," Owens added. "We are glad to support efforts to increase
recycling in Mesa."

The grant to Mesa is part of $370,386 awarded by ADEQ to fund recycling
programs in Maricopa County, including Tempe and Fountain Hills. Nearly
half the money will be spent to provide recycling in rural and
unincorporated areas of the county.

The grants are funded by ADEQ's Waste Reduction Assistance program,
which is for projects devoted to waste reduction, recycling and
composting. WRA projects may include new recycling collections,
household hazardous waste collections, electronics recycling programs,
mulching or composting operations, material processing operations and
manufacturing facilities that use recycled material as feedstock.
